La pioggia battente caduta durante la notte di San Silvestro non ha impedito lo svolgimento del capodanno medievale, con le proprie "maraviglie" suscitate dai figuranti e dai cuochi e cuoche della associazione Sestiere Castellare. Così giullari e briganti, meretrici e maghi, mangiatori di fuoco e nobili messeri e madonne hanno intrattenuto i commensali nel grande Auditorium del castello dove era allestita una vera osteria, comprese le fiaccole romane che avevano riempito di fumo il salone, proprio come nel Trecento. Tutti i partecipanti hanno potuto vivere un vero evento medievale, curato nei particolari scenici e nei cibi forniti ai commensali. Tutto rigorosamente precolombiano e tutto rigorosamente cotto e sfornato al momento, compresi i pani e i dolci. Hanno allietato la festa le bevande offerte a volontà: il vino Chianti , il sidro, l'idromele e il vino speziato.

La presentazione del romanzo "Carnaria" di Fabio Baroni ha riunito a Castel dell'Aquila, domenica 7 dicembre 2008, un numeroso pubblico. Il romanzo racconta la storia d'un Cavaliere errante all'inizio del Trecento che nel suo peregrinare in cerca della verità e forse del Sacro Graal incontrerà in terra di Francia l'amore e la passione di una donna, Gabriel, prima di essere ucciso e sepolto misteriosamente, divenendo cibo per la mosca carnaria. Le similitudini con la vicenda del Cavaliere di Gragnola sono molte e certamente non casuali. Il libro è andato a ruba, grazie anche alla dotta presentazione di Clementina Santi e Francesco Mallegni, dopo il saluto augurale della castellana Gabriella.

Si è svolta sabato 17 maggio 2008 una lezione molto coinvolgente del prof. Roberto Rizzo, germanista, ordinario di letteratura tedesca all'Università di Bologna, per un numeroso gruppo di intellettuali e studiosi, soci della Ferrariae Decus, prestigiosa e secolare associazione culturale di Ferrara, in visita a Castel dell'Aquila. Il prof. Rizzo ha accettato l'invito a lui rivolto da Giacomo Savioli, presidente della Ferrariae Decus, e dalla castellana Gabriella Girardin, di tenere una lezione pubblica sull'ultimo romanzo di Franz Kafka, intitolando l'inziativa "Il Castello kafkiano nel castello dell'Aquila"; il docente ha cominciato la lezione parlando dello scrittore ebreo naturalizzato tedesco e dell'importanza di questa figura di intellettuale nella letteratura occidentale. Poi è passato ad illustrare i temi critici che stanno alla base dell'ultimo romanzo, rimasto incompiuto per la morte prematura dello scrittore, avvenuta nel 1924, a quarantuno anni, a causa della tubercolosi.

Il 25 aprile 2008 Castel dell'Aquila ha ridato agli abitanti della Lunigiana e ai fedeli di culto cattolico i luoghi che furono propri di un'antica usanza, quella delle preghiere di Rogazione. Presso la Maestà della Madonna dell'Uva, ai piedi dell'antica torre, e sul Rivellino del castello, Don Edoardo Mori ha impartito la santa benedizione al sottostante paese di Gragnola, ai boschi e all'agro circostante il castello, ricordando ai fedeli il significato delle Rogazioni devozionali, praticate per chiedere a Dio e ai Santi del Paradiso la protezione contro le calamità atmosferiche, per il buon raccolto e per la richiesta di qualche grazia per la salute propria e dei propri cari. Il rito si è concluso con la preghiera comune recitata dagli spalti del Rivellino.

Il 28 dicembre 2007 è nata Martina, la bambina di Claudia ed Emanuele che avevano celebrato il loro matrimonio nel Castello dell'Aquila il 4 dicembre 2004. Tre anni dopo Martina è arrivata! Ora la Castellana e tutto lo staff dell'Aquila l'aspettano, assieme a mamma, papà e nonni per festeggiare il lieto evento. Ciao Martina, benvenuta!

Sabato 8 dicembre 2007 si è svolta nel Salone Auditorium la presentazione del libro "Il Cavaliere di Castel dell'Aquila - Il ritrovamento, lo scavo archeologico, gli studi antropologici, la storia del castello" edito dall'Istituto Internazionale di Studi Liguri Sezione Lunense. Si tratta del cinquantesimo numero della prestigiosa serie del Giornale Storico della Lunigiana, un tomo di oltre trecento pagine curato da Eliana M. Vecchi e Stefano Ricci. È il terzo libro, in poco meno di tre anni, che viene edito avendo a soggetto il castello di Gragnola, dopo quello pubblicato dall'Università di Foggia nel 2004 che raccoglieva gli studi scientifici sul Cavaliere di Gragnola e dopo quello realizzato da Alberta Faggioli Saletti sulla vicenda della marchesa Cleria Malaspina del Treschietto vittima di un assedio fiorentino perpetratosi nel 1638 ("Quello che mi è successo mentre son stata nel Castello dell'Aquila" - Casa Editrice San Giacomo, 2005). La presentazione del libro è stata preceduta da una visita guidata al maniero, condotta dalla proprietaria Gabriella Girardin. Alla manifestazione sono intervenuti il sindaco di Fivizzano, Loris Rossetti, l'assessore della Comunità montana Paolo Bissoli, e gli studiosi Cristina Baudone (Istituto per la Valorizzazione dei Castelli), Fabio Baroni (Comune di Fivizzano), Germano Cavalli (Associazione M. Giuliani), Romeo Pavoni (Università di Genova), Stefano Ricci (Università di Siena). I lavori sono stati coordinati da Eliana M. Vecchi.

Il 21 ottobre 2007 è stata restituita al culto cattolico la cosiddetta Maestà della Madonnina, ai piedi del Castello dell'Aquila. Si tratta di un'antica maestà, andata diruta negli anni di abbandono del fortilizio malaspiniano di Gragnola. Oggi questo manufatto devozionale è stato completamente restaurato e arredato con l'immagine sacra della Madonna dell'Uva, ritratta in una policroma maiolica ferrarese realizzata dalla ceramista Monica Grandi. La maiolica era stata donata al Castello dell'Aquila dalla prestigiosa Ferrariae Decus quale riconoscimento per l'opera meritoria di restauro. La celebrazione eucaristica e la cerimonia di benedizione della maestà sono state officiate dal parroco di Gragnola, Don Edoardo Mori, mentre il saluto ufficiale per l'inaugurazione è stato portato dal presidente della Ferrariae Decus, Dott. Giacomo Savioli. Oggi la Maestà della Madonnina è liberamente fruibile, sia per lo svolgimento delle antiche rogazioni dei gruppi di donne e uomini, sia per il raccoglimento in preghiera devozionale del viandante solitario.

Sabato 13 ottobre 2007 si è tenuta nel Salone Auditorium la seconda edizione del Premio con l'alta partecipazione dei premiati e la presenza di pubblico ammesso per la prima volta ad applaudire la consegna dei riconoscimenti. Il Premio Puccini Operosità, lanciato dall'Unione Nazionale Circoli e Associazioni Liriche e Musicali, ha trovato nel Castello dell'Aquila la sede prestigiosa per la consegna dell'onorificenza ai premiati, giunti da diverse Regioni italiane. Alla premiazione è seguito un concerto di arie e duetti pucciniani, protagonisti il soprano Anna Flores e il tenore Roberto Ferrari Melega, al pianoforte era il maestro Paolo Potì. Il presidente del Premio, prof. Manrico Testi, ha poi presentato la mostra di Elios Lippi intitolata "Scene pittoriche per Giacomo Puccini".

On 14th April 2007, the vintage car rally of the Kursaal Car Club from Montecatini Terme took place within the castle. The drivers met on a sunny afternoon with a perfect temperature, with good humour written all over their wide smiles. The most admired car was a 1964 Ferrari 330 GT, driven by Franco Bulgarelli, pictured here with Romano Reggianini. The car was previously owned by none other than Enzo Ferrari himself! Other highlights were a 1963 Jaguar Mk2 with an enormous engine for a sports car of the period (3400 cc), and the Alfa Romeo 1300 Junior Duetto made famous in the film ?Il Sorpasso?. Also worth a mention was the only example in Italy of a hand-built Siata Zagato from 1955 in aluminium, fitted for racing. Other gems of note included a Topolono A from 1941: old, but in perfect working order.

The production team of the popular Italian television show “Sereno variabile”, presented by Osvaldo Bevilacqua on the Italian television channel Rai Due, used Aquila Castle as the last part of a programme on Lunigiana. The noted anthropologist Francesco Mallegni (University of Pisa) spoke of the Knight during the programme. In the scenes featuring Gragnola’s Aquila Castle and the Verrucola Castle, the two communities met in period costume to seal the “peace” that had never been officially proclaimed after the bloody events which occurred in June 1418. The programme was broadcast on Saturday 21st October 2006, with Aquila Castle as the perfect backdrop for the beautiful period costumes of the ladies, knights and flag throwers.

The researcher Maria Alberta Faggioli Saletti with her book “What happened to me when I was in Aquila Castle – 7/22 May 1638” published by the Editor San Giacomo of Ferrara was awarded the Borgo Ligure Prize for the Essay Section. It was delivered during a large and crowded public ceremony held in Santa Margherita Ligure on 8th December 2006. The pages of the book were taken from an unedited document preserved by the State Archives in Mantua where Ms. Faggioli Saletti discovered them. They tell the story of Cleria Malaspina of Treschietto before the Imperial High Tribunal in Vienna, where the Marquis was summoned to justice regarding the long siege of the Florentines and the Fivizzanas to conquer the Castle.

One of the most ancient and prestigious Emilian cultural associations, the Ferrariae Decus, patron in Ferrara of numerous initiatives for the preservation and recovery of the monumental and artistic heritage of the renaissance city, has donated an effigy of the Madonna of the Grape to Aquila Castle, from precious polychrome porcelain, it is the work of the ceramic artist Monica Grandi, artisan of Ferrara. The sculpture was presented by the President of the Ferrariae Decus, Giacomo Savioli, as recognition for the precious restoration of the Castle. It is placed in all its majesty on the perimeter road of the castle, where in the past the population came to venerate a Saint Anthony prior and later a Madonna with Child with devotional rites.

Gragnola’s Castle owner received the important “Thomas Dempster” prize awarded each year by the Ippolito Rosellini Association of Pisa to people who have particularly distinguished themselves in operations of protection and safeguarding of the Italian monumental and Historical heritage. The ceremony, sponsored by UNESCO, was held in the Royal Victoria Hotel of Pisa on 8th December 2005, where the president of the Rosellini Association, Giovanni Ranieri Fascetti spoke of the works carried out on Aquila Castle and of its history, but also the castle owner’s initiative to recover and restore the monument, giving as motivation for the award “the contribution given to the economic development of Gragnola and Valle del Lucido”.

On 6th July 2004, in the marina of Erice, in Sicily, one of the technicians responsible for the restoration of Aquila Castle noted the strange shape of a stone eroded by the sea, over the centuries. He photographed it and moved on. Later he was visited in his sleep by the Gragnola Knight on a white horse, who told him “Tell them of the stone from the sea, put it at the top of the tower, on the part that over looks the Apuan mountains and I will appear”. Was this just prompted by the finding of the skeleton just months before? Perhaps. It was however also shared by the workman who had first touched the bones of the knight. Carried from Sicily to Gragnola, the stone today is in the castle, and whoever touches it “feels” that the Knight will appear sooner or later, on the background of one of the highest peaks of the Apuan Mountains.

20th February is the date of birth of the anthropologist Stefano Ricci. Originally from Gragnola, he now lives in Siena where he works at the University. Ricci was called numerous times to the castle site following the findings of bones that he quickly recognised as belonging to goats, wild boar, and sheep. He always reminded workers to find him a nice human skull. On 19th February 2004, the land revealed the skeleton of the medieval Knight, and the first to be called was Professor Ricci who, having reached the site on 20th February, commented “It is one of the most wonderful birthdays of my life”. Once the bones had been dug up, he studied them and today still continues to study them and tells of developments in his research during conferences.

It was 17th November 2003 when, not without emotion on behalf of all the workers on the site, the first stone was placed for the reconstruction of the Great Tower of Aquila Castle. The blessing was carried out by the Gragnola parish priest under a light rain that did not affect the ceremony. Behind the first stone, upon which the date 17.11.2003 was inscribed by the Gragnola sculptor Emilio Furia, a bottle containing a manuscript bearing a prayer destined to posterity was placed and signed by all those behind the restoration of the castle. The Castle owner, the architect, the builder, the technicians and workmen of the site. The Great Tower was built in record time, and finished in August 2005. Over a thousand cubic metres of rock wall were laid down.

Carmen The representation of Bizet’s “Carmen” is still alive in the memories of lovers of good music, performed on 10th and 11th August 2001, when the restoration site was temporarily stopped. Under the direction of the Maestro Giuseppe Bruno and directed by Aldo Tarabella, the performance was given by the mezzo-soprano Monica Benvenuti (Carmen), the soprano Gloria Storti (Micaela), the tenor Diego Del Auria (Don Josè) and the baritone Alessandro Paliaga (Escamillo). It was an unprecedented success for the territory of Lunigiana, with both performances already registering a full house two weeks before the performances.

A prestigious recognition was awarded to Aquila Castle by the Association for Italian Historical Homes (ADSI) on 27th May 1999: the official addition to the List of Honours of Historical Homes in Tuscany, in the section “Conservation and Restoration” for the launch of important works of recovery on the severely ruined monument, that was even more ruined than its condition in the photograph on a postcard from the 1940’s. The diploma of its listing was awarded to the new Gragnola Castle owner by the then vice-president of the Tuscany Region, Marionlina Marcucci, in the presence of the President of the ADSI in Tuscany, Niccolò Rosselli Del Turco.
